Not so good news coming from the re introductions in Lorca
Torrealvilla, a female lynx whose tracking collar was found in a ditch at the end of June, is still being searched for.
The Iberian lynx named Tiko died due to plastic ingestion in Lorca.
Tejo, one of the reintroduced lynxes in Lorca, has been relocated due to its poor condition.
The Ministry of Environment has reported that one of these lynxes reintroduced in the highlands of Lorca, named “Tejo,” has been transferred to the Wildlife Recovery Center of Valle because there were indications of a possible poor physical condition. This possible deterioration was observed through a viral video on June 30th. Tejo was captured on July 3rd using a box-trap system, and initial tests revealed that it had lost approximately 20% of its weight. At that time, its weight was 9.2 kilograms.
According to the ministry, Tejo is currently in isolation and being monitored. Faustino Martínez, Deputy Director of General Heritage and Climate Change, added that after being settled in this center, a more detailed veterinary check-up will be conducted next week, and then a decision will be made regarding its return to the wild.
Similarly, efforts are ongoing to locate another reintroduced lynx named “Torrealvilla” using camera trapping. At the end of June, the SEPRONA unit of the Civil Guard found its tracking collar in a ditch alongside the highway at Puerto de Lumbreras. No traces indicating that the collar was forcibly removed have been found by forensic experts, so it is speculated that it may have naturally detached, and the female lynx might still be in the area.
This is not the first setback in the process of reintroducing the Iberian lynx in Lorca under the LynnxConnect project. Recently, the death of one of them, “Tiko,” was also reported, and during the autopsy, plastic remains were found in its stomach.
