Spain’s new animal welfare legislation, effective from September 2024, bans the sale of dogs, cats, and ferrets in pet shops. This law is designed to enhance animal welfare standards and prohibits pet shops from displaying these animals for commercial purposes, classifying such displays as serious offenses. Only registered breeders will be allowed to sell these pets.
In addition to this ban, the legislation imposes various responsibilities on pet owners, including compliance with identification requirements and undergoing training courses for dog ownership. Violations of the law can result in hefty fines ranging from €500 to €200,000, depending on the severity of the offense.
While advocates argue that the law will help combat animal mistreatment and abandonment, critics suggest it may overly prioritize animal rights at the expense of human considerations. Overall, this legislation marks a significant shift in Spain’s approach to animal welfare
