I just read this article at the BBC: https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-61980467 – Its about ancient trees in England and says that there are many more than once thought.
So I was wondering what kind of census there is for Spain? Are they even counted and protected?

Most regions in Spain have their protected ancient trees now and many have lists… I write about them when I come across them on the Natural Park pages at Wildside Holidays. Here is an example: https://wildsideholidays.co.uk/macizo-penyagolosa-natural-park/
Navarra has a lot of “Monumentos naturales” as well: http://www.navarra.es/home_es/Temas/Medio+Ambiente/Patrimonio+natural/Monumentos+naturales.htm

Thanks Clive… I notice as well that you have lots of botanic gardens listed on your Andalucia park page and I would guess they have location information for ancient trees close to them… https://wildsideholidays.co.uk/natural-and-national-parks-in-andalucia/

I found the Andalucia website for Arboles Singulares but it doesn’t work at all and also a security warning trying to download to google earth.. https://www.juntadeandalucia.es/medioambiente/portal/landing-page-%C3%ADndice/-/asset_publisher/zX2ouZa4r1Rf/content/inventario-de-c3-a1rboles-y-arboledas-singulares-de-andaluc-c3-ada/20151

I have just come back from a trip that included the SerranĂa de Cuenca and I was awestruck by the age of the juniper forest there….. Heres a wiki page on the area but I will write one up for Wildside Holidays soon…. https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serran%C3%ADa_de_Cuenca
I was told by a warden here that some of the sabinas were hundreds and hundreds of years old…. beautiful!

Hi SteveT… I absolutely loved revisiting after 15 years or so from the last time…. Cuenca itself has changed quite a lot but the surrounding countryside is pretty stunning.
I wrote about the natural park area here: https://wildsideholidays.co.uk/the-serrania-de-cuenca-natural-park/
