Here in the Sierra de Grazalema the use of herbicides has finally been banned (Within the limits of the Natural Park area anyway)
However, the use continues on roadsides without any kind of thought or reason right up to and including river valleys (This photo taken last week just outside the Natural Park limits…. Its so sad!
The quantity of chemical used over the years is quite stunning. So much so that after testing of water suplies in the area such as lakes, streams and sources, amounts of up to EIGHT times the allowed limit (by European law) of glyphosate has been found.
Take a trip on the Wildside!

Even though its still being used I am fairly sure that the last nails in the coffin are being hammered away? Hopefully anyway…..
According to Spanish environment NGO, Ecologistas en Accion, major cities, including Barcelona, Madrid, Zaragoza as well as the region of Extremuda have decided to ban glyphosate. In addition, the wine-growing regions of La Rioja and Aragon have also approved motions against endocrine-disrupting chemicals including glyphosate.

Driving my kids to school today and entering the village of Grazalema… (Ummm the iconic village in the geographic centre of the Sierra de Grazalema natural Park….) What did I see?
Yep, the town halls gardener with a knapsack sprayer happily killing all those weeds along the side of the road and around his “topiary” bushes (Including the ones right by the river)
I give up!
