The 2023 wolf population monitoring surveys published by the Andalusian government conclude that the Iberian wolf is extinct across the entire region. This is the first time the extinction of this iconic species, once a symbol of Andalusia’s mountains, has been officially acknowledged, though it may have been gone for years.

Its interesting how the article mentions that it is only a matter of time before Andalusia / Sierra Morena is recolonized by wolves from the areas it was extirpated. This 2022 article is an interesting follow on:

Thanks for that link SteveT. What an interesting study. I actually think its only a matter of time before the Sierra Morena contains wolves again. Surely they will move down from the north as numbers grow and they disperse (as is their nature.) We’ll see though how landowners and stakeholders cope with that. I read somewhere recently (though I can’t find the article now) that the Spanish government have a legal obligation under EU law to re introduce wolf into the Sierra Morena….. I presume this is why the Junta de Andalucia took 20 years to declare them extinct! heel dragging at its very Spanish best! hehehehehehe
