Whats the furthest South in Spain that you have seen or heard of a slow worm? I am sure I saw one once in the Sierra Norte de Seville but everyone tells me thats impossible and that it was probably a skink or worm lizard….. (Even back then I thought that I could tell the differnce between those three species! 🙂

Hi Jenny and welcome to the forum… 🙂
Wow, that is really south for slow worm (Anguis fragilis) I have been here long enough to never say never about anything as Spain always throws up surprises.
However, all distribution maps show this species to be no further south than Guadalajara or Northern Madrid. (Ie it occupies the Northern half of the Iberian peninsular.
I wonder if you have seen the similar creatures such as the skinks or worm lizard..
Do you have a photo? Or, can you get one next time you see one?

Hi,thanks for letting me join this group.I am pretty sure it was a slow worm as I have come across them before.I will take a photo of it next time.I joined a bird group recently and sent in a sighting of a red Kite and they told me I was wrong. As it had been knocking about for a while I managed to find it one morning and take a photo. They confirmed my sighting.I came close to eating my hat then, and I am pretty sure I will eat my hat again if I am wrong about the slow worm.Saludos.April 29, 2021 at 6:02 am #690cliveAdmin
