Its so sad. This is a NATIONAL PARK, a BIOSPHERE RESERVE and has had hundreds of millions in financing over the many years that it has been declared a protected area. Some of the finest biologists and scientists have dedicated their lifes work to this environment and the wildlife that resides here. It is nothing more than a disgrace that the spanish government has allowed, and continues to allow this to happen. So that we can eat strawberries in January?? Really?
And now its going to be an “endangered” world heritage site. What a mess!
UNESCO has granted Spain until December 2024 to provide an updated report on the park’s current state and the efforts made to protect it. The organisation has starkly warned that failing to act could result in Doñana’s inclusion in the list of endangered World Heritage sites.
Juan Carlos del Olmo, Secretary General of WWF Spain, lamented, “UNESCO is once again threatening to add Doñana to the ignominious list of endangered World Heritage Sites. This would be a real disgrace for Andalucia and Spain.” He added, “We hope President Moreno Bonilla heeds this warning and fulfils his international obligations.”
Here is a very short video clip of the situation in August 2023. But, you get the picture
Oh and this would be funny if it wasn’t so serious. “Lets buy another 7,500 hectares and place it under the “protection” of a National park that we can’t manage or look after in the first place!
Prison sentences for illegal water extraction in Spanish Nature Reserve Doñana
SEVILLE – A recent court ruling in Seville imposes harsh penalties as a family face prison sentences for illegal water extraction in the Doñana protected natural area. The wetland is in danger of succumbing to drought.
It concerns a couple of brothers who have owned a farm in Aznalcázar since the 1990s. The farm is partly located above the “Almonte-Marismas” water source. Moreover, this is the main water source for Doñana National Park. The four brothers and one sister each received a prison sentence of two years and five months. Furthermore, they are also banned from professions related to agriculture for two years. An additional one-year prison sentence was also imposed for damage to the environment.
I guess it will go to appeal but its a bit ironic that the fine goes to the water company! And, where does a cotton farmer get 2 million euros from to pay the fine anyway?
Most of this issue is the fault of hidrográfica and the police and park authorities anyway for letting it happen in the first place! The laws are there, they just need to be enforced.
The Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadalquivir (CHG), responsible for water management in the area, must receive compensation of almost €1.97 million from the convicted.
The ruling may still be challenged. However, if it stands, it will be the first case in Doñana to impose prison sentences for illegal water extraction. Moreover, it highlights the growing awareness and seriousness of environmental crimes in Spain.
