Today I have mostly been confusing myself on the subject of trap door spiders in Spain… Sigh!
Any input, comments or images will be most gratefully received! 🙂

Thats funny! But an interesting article Clive. I will keep my eyes open for tiny round holes in the ground with lids on the size of 20 cent coins????? hmmm???

I think I saw trap doors on Saturday! On the side of a path where I walk quite frequently, so no idea why I didn’t notice it earlier. Well, the earth is quite bare now. There were various holes with and without lid. I tried to open one lid, pressed it, but didn’t succeed. Some entrances were constructed like little chimneys and when I fumbled around, I broke one off. The “earth ring” itself was really solid, I looked at it from all sides and when I turned it around, the trap-door opened! So it only opens from the inside out. As you can see from the size of my finger the hole was rather like a 1 cent coin – of course I don’t know if there are bigger ones.

Yes the door opens from the inside!.. I once tried to open one but it was impossible… You have to be very careful because sometimes the spider is inside holding the door shut and you can hurt her if you force it open…
Great photos Susanne! Thanks for sharing… 🙂

Thanks for your answer Miguel. Do you know the hunting strategy? Â The trap-door is so solid that I can’t imagine the spider notices that something is above it.

Hi Susanne, if you scroll to the top and first post by Clive and click the link to the article, there is a video of a trapdoor spider hunting. It’s fascinating… (Also a lot of info in that article.. I can see why he got in a pickle whilst writing it! hahahaha 🙂

I have updated this article…. Its still confusing me and real hard evidence and studies are hard to come by! 🙂
UPDATE April 2022. There is some controversy surrounding the presence or not of Ummidia aedificatoria here in Spain as many believe all have been miss identified and really are Ummidia picea. (See link below).
