The river level data is showing quite a few have just stopped flowing now… http://www.redhidrosurmedioambiente.es/saih/resumen/rios
Also I read in the Diario de Cadiz about the problems looming if it doesn’t rain soon….. https://www.diariodecadiz.es/noticias-provincia-cadiz/Sequia-Cadiz-embalses-descienden_0_1710430205.html

What normally happens is a big break in the drought with heavy non stop rain, storms and floods… Happened back in 97 after a few years of drought…. I am hoping for gentle rainfall during the night and nice and sunny during the daytime 🙂 Hmmmmm wishful thinking????

The BBc have said that we are having the worst drought in 500 years across Europe: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62648912
Combined Drought Indicator (CDI)
The latest update of the CDI, including the first ten days of August 2022, points to 47% of
Europe being in warning conditions and 17% in alert conditions (Fig. 1). Soil moisture and
vegetation stress are both severely affected. Drought hazard has been increasing, especially in:
Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Romania,
Hungary, northern Serbia, Ukraine, Moldova, Ireland and United Kingdom. The rest of Europe,
already affected by drought, maintains stable severely dry conditions. Local recovery is observed
in southern Czech Republic, northern Austria, and limited areas of central France. Regions
already affected by drought in spring 2022 (e.g., northern Italy, south-eastern France, some
areas in Hungary and Romania), are the ones with the most worsening conditionsThe full study is here: https://edo.jrc.ec.europa.eu/documents/news/GDO-EDODroughtNews202208_Europe.pdf

Wow that looks dry Clive!
The BBC have picked up the story about the drought and the effect it is having on the olive and sunflower harvest… There is also talk about bad water usage practise and unsustainability of the water use model….. Worth a read…..
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62707435
Several countries across the continent have been battling wildfires and heatwaves, with Spain particularly badly hit. More than 270,000 hectares here have been burnt this year, according to the European Forest Fire Information System.
The extreme heat and lack of rainfall have led to a dramatic drop in levels of Spain’s natural water reserves. The Vinuela reservoir near Malaga is at just over 10% of its capacity.

The Sur in English have published an article as AndalucĂa sets up a crisis cabinet amid increasing concerns about the drought.
https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/drought-crisis-20220914103135-nt.html
The working group is called the Drought Monitoring Committee and answers directly to the president of the Junta de AndalucĂa, Juanma Moreno. Its members include regional government ministers responsible for policy, sustainability, agriculture, public works, tourism and industry, among others. The last two were included because the tourism and industry sectors can also be seriously affected if there is a lack of water.

Wow Rachel! I haven’t seen this before.
https://monitordesequia.csic.es/monitor/?lang=en#index=spei#months=1#week=1#month=2#year=2022
If you select the month drop down as January then Feb, March etc you can see how the drought has developed this year in Spain.
