The news that 27 captive bred lynx will be released this year is a little bitter sweet for me especially after the news last week of the missing lynx suspected to have been killed for stealing chickens…
It seems obvious to me that as the lynx population grows (not far from a thousand individuals now) and disperses it will surely come into contact with humans and their countryside ways. If a lynx steals a chicken its probably because there isn’t enough natural food supply in the area where it was released, or roamed into.
Rabbits, rabbits, rabbits. there just aren’t enough rabbits!

I thought that the lynx re introduction program was run by the people at lynx ex situ on a national scale now but I came across this other project ‘ViaLynx’ that doesn’t seem to be connected to them..
Based out of the University of Valencia these guys are researching places to release lynx from breeding programs.

Are these people working separately or are they a part of the life lynx ex situ project???

Pretty good news this year from the Iberian lynx breeding and reintroduction project with a count now of 1,111 individuals which is up from 100 just 20 years ago.
