An interesting project in Andujar, Andalucia. Apparently European bison help to generate new forest and keep the ecosystem healthy…
I think that there are already bison re introductions in Cantabria from a few years ago but up to date info is hard to find.

There is mention of the Spanish bison participation in the rewilding Europe website… Although it is from 2015….
Here: https://rewildingeurope.com/news/18-newborn-european-bison-in-the-european-rewilding-network-areas/
“Another member of ERN in Spain, Atapuerca, received one of the Dutch born bulls that met up with two females to start a new reproductive herd in an area where wild horses and cattle roam. The herd currently consists of 22 animals as two bulls were translocated to Spanish bison areas in early August.”

That’s pretty amazing. The European bison went down to almost single figures. There is an excellent article on the nature website. Researchers found that European bison are actually a hybrid of the steppe bison, the Eurasian ancestor of American bison, and aurochs, the ancestor of domestic cattle
https://blog.nature.org/science/2017/08/22/remarkable-story-how-bison-returned-europe/
Conservationists argue that mammals like European bison play a significant role in shaping ecosystems. Much as American bison have played a role in grassland management on Nature Conservancy preserves in North America, European bison are now shaping forests and open areas in Germany, France, Spain and other countries.

Here’s the Bison reintroduction scheme in the Picos de Europa. The reintroduced European bison are the main attraction in the area, along with other iconic species such as the indigenous wild Pottoka horses, Water buffalo, Cantabrian bear, Iberian wolf, and large herbivores.

The Guardian newspaper has quite an interesting article here. Though the statement that there is no European or Spanish government grants is a bit suspect…. I thought that the rewilding Europe scheme was a funded NGO

Here this years baby bison, however people are up in arms about a footpath being closed in order to protect the baby etc etc and also rumors that they will be offered up for trophy hunters at some point in the future… Sigh!

I heard that there was an inundation of people wanting to see the new born bison and that caused havoc in an area where hardly any rural tourism happens…. Locals are complaining about traffic and litter…… 🙁

Seems to be causing a lot of controversy in various hunting, wildlife and re introduction circles…. many knowledgeable people are saying that these bison were never in the Iberian peninsular and the cave paintings at altamira are a different species anyway…
FAPAS are grumpy (as usual): https://www.fapas.es/noticias/que-pasa-con-el-bisonte-en-espana?
One comment as follows on the facebook page of FAPAS
June 20, 2021 at 7:39 pm #824Dave
El Pais have picked up the story…. There are quite a few pretty eminent wildlife experts opposed to this project..

Pretty good article from Fernando Morán Castillo.
Veterinario.
