Interesting article on the BBC website about the move towards the use of plastic grass in the UK instead of a traditional lawn….

Being a gardener in the Uk for many years I never liked neat lawns and created wildlife havens for my customers to enjoy whenever I could get away with it…. I suspect these plastic alternatives will probably turn out to be even worse

This stuff has to be bad… After a while it goes brittle and breaks so must end up in rivers after heavy rain?

At the moment, there is a point: it does not need water!!!!

But it is a shame that the Spanish loves artificial things: flavours, scents, flowers – grass! And chemical products! I was shocked to find methanol among the cleaning products in the supermercado, when I moved here 15 years ago! Not now, I think, but I suspect that varoous versions of “agua fuerte” are still easily available?

You can even get bleach with different scents!!! And it is used for the most weird purposes, often undiluted!!!!

But while the fake grass might indeed be greener, at least in colour, its environmental impacts are difficult to gloss over.

Paul Hetherington, fundraising director for the charity Buglife, says artificial turf is far from an eco-friendly alternative to natural grass.

“It blocks access to the soil beneath for burrowing insects, such as solitary bees, and the ground above for soil dwellers such as worms, which will be starved of food beneath it,” he says. “It provides food for absolutely no living creatures.”

ban it and get rid of it I say!!!!
