The latest figures are 1111 Iberian lynx in the wild with about 150 on captive breeding programs…
There is a very good article here in Spanish detailing the distribution of the Iberian lynx: https://www.ellinceiberico.com/poblaciones-lince-iberico/
History and more info in English here: https://wildsideholidays.co.uk/iberian-lynx-lynx-pardinus-lince-iberico/

There are also quite a few links to articles and info on the Spanish language website of ASSANDA (AsociaciĂłn Andaluza para la Defensa de los Animales). Dating back over 10 years, the articles are not just the “medal giving pat on the back” ones of the Junta de Andalucia but also include the failures and troubles surrounding the lynx projects in Spain.

Well two less now after being killed by dogs in Granada province! What a shame…

Well more than back in 2007 anyway….. This old BBC article is fascinating. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6987435.stm
On the edge of the Donana national park in Andalucia, just about at Spain’s south-western tip, the pine forests hide a very special building.
It’s a breeding project for one of the rarest wild cats in the world, the Iberian lynx.
They only live in this part of Spain, and while it’s impossible to tell for sure, it’s estimated that only about 150 of them are left in the wild.
A shame that year after year the strawberry fields, construction and illegal wells continued which must have slowed the lynx recovery by a huge amount……

Castilla-La Mancha, a region in central Spain, is home to the Iberian lynx, one of the most endangered feline species in the world. Thanks to a reintroduction program launched in 2014, the region now boasts a population estimated at over 582 individuals, including 223 cubs born in 2022. In this latest phase of the project, called âLife Lynx Connect,â three lynx are being released in the area, including a pair of one year old lynx named Tempo and Tesla. These releases mark another milestone in the ongoing effort to recover the Iberian lynx population in Castilla-La Mancha.
