Time will tell how this works out but be sure that furtive hunting will increase

Hi Clive
Who knows what will happen. Up in the Sierra de Culebra in Castilla y Leon on the border with Portugal a wolf trophy can cost 12,000 euros. This area is a reserva regional de caza and I suppose the money is re invested in the area and wages for guarda forestales etc?
I am not pro hunting but it seems to me that the consequences of a complete ban on hunting need to be thought out really carefully.

Hi Carl, I think recently the price on a wolf’s head as being far far less. I seem to remember 3,000 but don’t quote me on that. And wolf tourism is bringing in an awful lot of money these days, or at least it was until lockdown. And of course normal hunting is going to continue with the Red deer etc

Sorry to clarify, the price was going for about 12,000 10 years ago but has dropped significantly since then. I’m not sure why

The range of the wolf in Spain changed so dramatically as this map shows
This is from the website of Asociación para la Conservación y Estudio del Lobo Ibérico ASCEL

I think the last official census was 2012 to 2014. The results are in PDF here. (Spanish)

Looking at prices for wolf hunting, it does seem that Spanish wolf is still the most expensive in Europe… I am guessing because it is a sub species.
Down from 17,000 euros to around 13,000 euros
https://www.bookyourhunt.com/en/wolf-hunting-in-europe
Interesting to see the above website still advertising though I see the dates of end of February 2021 for the last hunts…. Mabye next year they wont be advertising? Or maybe there will be a rush to hunt these subspecies until the hunting ban comes into force?

And here we have the latest point of view from the BBC with the ominous title of “Beware the return of the Iberian wolf, say Spain’s farmers”

Clive, the link that you put for the hunting website earlier in this thread…… It still shows hunting holidays in Spain available for the season 2021,2022 and priced at 14,000 euros per person!!!!!!
Surely this is wrong no?

I have written to the company in question… I wonder if they will answer me?
Hi, I see that you have wolf hunting in Spain advertised for 2021 and 2022. Is this correct as I was under the impression that wolf hunting was now banned in Spain? Thank you for clarifying the situation.
hmmmmm….

And here is the answer i just received….
Hello Clive,
Thank you for your inquiry! Currently, as far as we know, the wolf hunting ban in Spain varies from province to province. You can contact the outfitter for more details.
Hope this helps!Kind regards,

New law on hold for a while regarding adding the Iberian wolf to the list of protected species in Spain…..
Oh dear, a bit of a set back with these words “On the other hand, the Board’s position is very clear, stating that “there is no conservation reason that justifies the inclusion of the wolf in the List of Wild Species under the Special Protection Regime (Lespre).”
“Hemos logrado una paralización temporal para conseguir que se negocie el Plan de Gestión”, destacó.
Por otra parte, la posición de la Junta es muy clara, al señalar que “no existe ninguna razón de conservación que justifique la inclusión del lobo en el Listado de Especies Silvestres en Régimen de Protección Especial (Lespre) que impulsa el Miteco”.
