The Iberian wolf has been added to the endangered species list and the hunting fraternity are up in arms about it…. There is an article in English at the sur newspaper
http://www.surinenglish.com/national/202109/21/hunting-wolves-banned-across-20210921132117.html
There cant be a blanket ban on hunting though no? I would have thought that control of numbers would be important especially if they start to increase drastically in numbers over the next 10 years or so….

And as expected 6 autonomous regions have declared that they will fight the new law protecting the wolf from hunting…. A bit odd that Andalucía has joined in as their wolf population is pretty dire to say the least…

I have updated the Iberian wolf information page at Wildside Holidays to add in the interpretation centre in the Sierra de Culebra:
Information about the Iberian wolf and where to see them in Spain. https://wildsideholidays.co.uk/iberian-wolf-canis-lupus-signatus-lobo-iberico/

I’m off to the Sierra Culebra next week. Has anyone got any tips of increasing my chance of seeing a wolf?
The Aliste valley is supposed to be a good place to look.
I say one once in the Pena de Francia area in the late 1990s and would love to see one again.

I think that the recent fire has been devastating to the Sierra Culebra.
You could get in touch with these people to get better info though they told me recently that all their up coming trips were on hold… https://wildsideholidays.co.uk/wild-wolf-experience/

Some parts of Cantabria seem to be having a harder time that other so it looks like controlled hunting will be allowed in 2023….. Damage to livestock in the area is the reason.
Breathe and try to be nice to people 🙂

Iberian Wolf Hunting Regulations in Spain: Spain Lifts Wolf Hunting Ban North of the Duero.
In March 2025, the Spanish parliament passed a law targeting “food production waste”, which included an amendment to lift the 2021 ban on wolf hunting north of the Duero River. This decision allows controlled hunting to resume in regions like Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia, and northern Castilla y León, where most of Spain’s Iberian wolves reside. The amendment was supported by parties such as the People’s Party (PP), Vox, Junts, and the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV).

Now the major wildlife organizations are shouting quite loud about the recent change in wolf protection status. There is a good article in the Quercus magazine on the following link….
