Rachel
After reading the bearded Vulture comments about lead contamination (http://iberianatureforum.com/forums/topic/the-annual-bearded-vulture-meeting-2021/) I thought I would post some further reading… The British Association for Shooting and Conservation has this statement and a lot of info on their website about the subject in general.
BASC has joined other rural organisations in issuing a statement on lead-free ammunition for live quarry shooting.
In consideration of wildlife, the environment and to ensure a market for the healthiest game products, at home and abroad, we wish to see an end to both lead and single-use plastics in ammunition used by those taking all live quarry with shotguns within five years.
We are jointly calling for our members to engage in this transition and work with us, the Gun Trade Association and the cartridge manufacturers to ensure that further viable alternatives are developed for every situation involving live quarry. This is an opportunity to take the initiative and ensure the reputation of the shooting community, as custodians of the countryside, is both maintained and enhanced.

Interesting article in the British press earlier this summer…
Officials pointed to research by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust which shows that between 50,000 and 100,000 wildfowl die each year after ingesting lead from spent pellets which they mistake for food.

Rachel did you see the news? Finally lead shot has been banned (in wetlands at least)
Article at SEO website: https://seo.org/2023/02/15/por-fin-se-prohibe-la-municion-de-plomo-en-todos-los-humedales-de-la-ue/

The VCF have an article about this fantastic news: https://4vultures.org/blog/eu-bans-the-use-of-lead-ammunition-in-wetlands/
From 15 February 2023 onwards, the use of lead ammunition became illegal in and around wetlands across all the EU 27 countries, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway. The ban on lead ammunition, a toxic compound seriously affecting nature, wildlife and human health, is a meaningful step forward to protect the wildlife that falls victim to lead poisoning every year. But the total phase-out of lead ammunition for hunting continues to be a priority to help restore the populations of vultures and other scavenging species.
Fantastic news for Spain’s wetlands and wildlife if this law is policed and enforced
Living the dream!
