Its fairly ironic that the red kites beeing sent from UK to Spain this year to help with repopulation projects could actually be descendents of the ones sent from Spain to UK back in the 70´s for exactly the same reason!

British-born red kites are being flown abroad in a mission to help rescue the dwindling Spanish population.
The birds of prey are threatened in parts of Spain by factors including poisoning and a lack of food.
Experts have been given special permission to take 30 red kites from England and release them in the remote mountains of south western Spain.Take a trip on the Wildside!

It is ironic. And a demonstrates how numbers can rebound if circumstances are right.
Interestingly the the best place to see them is along the M4 – I guess its road kill they are looking for.
What is causing the lack of food in Spain?

Red kite: a bird of prey on the brink of extinction in southern Spain
Experts say the species could disappear from the region within 20 years if urgent measures are not takenI can’t find the thread on facebook (as usual) but I remember reading a while ago about a mass poisoning event in Andalucia where 50 red kites were killed in one day along with many griffons, egyptian vulture and other carrion birds of prey…. That must have been a devastating hit to the red kite population. As far as I know the person who baited the carcass was never found….

The first ever Red Kite I saw was in Spain. I hadn’t realised until that point what a beautiful bird they are.
