Hi all…. After researching and writing about the two endemic subspecies of Iberian Wild boar in Spain I came across sometimes fascinating and sometimes disturbing information about wild boars, the damage they can create when overpopulation becomes an issue and also the worrying practice by some farmers of crossbreeding with domestic pigs.
Heres the main article: https://wildsideholidays.co.uk/iberian-wild-boar-sus-scofra-jabali/

Heres the study recently published about overpopulations of wild boar damaging the wetland ecosystem of Tablas de Daimiel.

They are certainly hybridising with pot bellied pigs! I have seen them in Catalonia and Andalusia….
Pets becoming established in the wild: free–living Vietnamese potbellied pigs in Spain.— Vietnamese potbellied (VPB) pigs (Sus scrofa) are a common pet in North America and Europe, but their recent decrease in popularity has increased their abandonment. Our main aim was to identify potential cases of free–living VPB pigs in Spain through an in–depth Google search. We identified 42 cases of free–living VPB pigs distributed throughout the country. The number of free–living VPB pigs reported increased by year but the species abundance still seems to be low. Signs of VPB pig reproduction and possible hybrids between VPB pigs and wild boar or feral pigs have been also reported. Free–living VPB pigs could erode the gene pool of the Spanish wild boar population and exacerbate the damage (e.g. crop damage or spread of diseases) already caused by wild board. Urgent evaluation and adequate management of wild VPB pig sightings is needed to prevent their establishment in natural habitats.

Hi…. The pot bellied pig study has been done just in time but whether the local authorities will act on it is another thing….
The fact that we found only a few cases of
apparently successful establishment of VPB pigs
in the wild suggests they are not yet abundant in
our setting. However, previous experiences suggest
that calls for early management action are required,
because by the time released exotic animals are
publicly recognised as a problem, it is often too
late for effective action, due to logistic, economic,
or scale factors.Basically… Cull them now before the situation gets too expensive or the hybrids get too numerous to control…

I posted this in the other wild boar thread but it applies here to….. Basically open war has been declared on the overpopulation of wild boar, in Andalucia, and the various hybrids that are running around eating everything in sight. The natural parks and hunting lobbies knew about this years ago and did nothing… Now they will very probably never be able to re balance the over population…
The junta de Andalucia declared a state of emergency back in 2018 and allowed the trapping and hunting of wild boar both inside and outside the limits of natural and national parkland.
Funny, there isn’t a lot of wild boar on the menu in many restaurants! ahhhhha. They must be legally butchered etc. I bet that costs too much money to make it viable…
What do they do with them when they trap them?

The link I put above to the Junta de Andalucía Hunting and fishing pages describes what can be culled and why. Also they specifically mention Vietnamese pot bellied pigs…. Oh and basically the entirety of Andalucía is the “area de emergencia”
October 1, 2021 at 11:07 am #1055Miguel

This short video on El Pais says it all… Wild boar population in many areas of Spain are well out of control… Barcelona has just started an extermination policy (provoked by the attack on popstar Shakira a few weeks ago I suppose!)

A new picture and article just published in the hunting magazine Jara y Sedal shows a clear hybrid between the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig and a boar or other (black domestic pig) … They even have a name now and are called “Cerdoli”…. 🙂 This one was spotted in Almeria.
